Beware Bogus Security Software

There’s a new trend out there designed to scam computer users: web sites that sell bogus software. Not only does the software not do what it claims to do, but the companies that sell this “software” get a hold of your credit card and can do even more damage to your bank account. Intego has spotted one such company, claiming to sell Macintosh antivirus software. MacGuard claims the following: Macguard’s high-tech system scanner will search your hard drive for malicious objects such as Adware, Spyware and Trojans, cleaning your files, eliminating the threats, and securing your privacy in just...

Phishing is not new. It’s usually financial institutions, PayPal and eBay who are misrepresented, with snazzy e-mails asking you to log into your account and “update your information.” But .Mac users and later MobileMe users have been targeted as well, as part of organized crime’s attempt to focus on the growing number of Mac users out there. How Much Does Phishing Cost?

...bogus web sits that look real. (Of course, it’s simple to copy most of a web page and direct it to a different server.) Users generally enter credit card numbers, thinking that they are doing so on their bank’s web site, for example, and only find out, when they get their next bill, that they’ve been duped. The best protection against phishing is intelligence: neither your bank, nor any online merchant, will send you an e-mail asking you to log into your account and give your credit card number. If you have doubts about e-mails, check the URLs that...

iCal Vulnerabilities to be Patched Soon

...in a client-side attack scenario is possible with user assistance by opening or clicking on specially crafted .ics file send over email or hosted on a malicious web server; or without direct user assitance if a would-be attacker has the ability to legitimately add or modify calendar files on a CalDAV server. The ZDNet article says that Apple will be patching these vulnerabilities soon, but this is atypical of Apple, who generally waits to release several security fixes together in an upgrade. In the meantime, “beware of strange links and e-mails with requests to add/open calendar (.ics) files.” ...
