Nominate Intego Software for Macworld UK’s Readers’ Awards

Macworld UK is announcing the winners of its best product awards on June 12, and they are taking nominations from readers in addition to judging a list of hardware and software selected by their staff. You can go to this page and nominate your favorite Intego program: is it VirusBarrier, which protects you from all known Mac viruses, and Windows viruses too? Is it Personal Backup, which ensures that you always have copies of all your files, especially the irreplaceable ones? Or is it one of Intego’s Internet Security Barrier suites, which provide several Intego programs in a single package? Choose your favorite and tell Macworld why you like it!

New Variants of the RSPlug Trojan Horse

Intego first reported on the OSX.RSPlug Trojan Horse back in October of 2007. Since then, the people behind this malware have been busy making variants in order to better trap Mac users. Most of the variants aren’t really variants; they are simply disk images with different names from the original. (One antivirus vendor claimed to have found some three dozen such variants, but did not, it seems, examine the code to see that they were all the same.)

Other variants include two whose code are different, but especially variants that purport to install differently-named software. The original RSPlug Trojan horse installed “software” called MacCodec; other versions’ installers claim to install MacVideo or Porn4Mac. Also, the containers - the disk images containing the installers - differ. The first version was found in a series of disk images named with four digits followed by the disk image extension: for example, 1023.dmg. Others have included operacodec1234.dmg, nitroticket2018.dmg, uincodec4264.dmg, ixcodec1292.dmg and xerocodec1292.dmg. (Note that there may be variations in the numbers contained in these names, as well as the names themselves.)

In any case, this Trojan is alive and well, and recent posts in Mac forums show that users are still being infected. Intego VirusBarrier protects against all these variants, and will continue to protect against new ones as they are discovered.

MacNN Likes Personal Antispam X5

The MacNN website has just published a first look at Personal Antispam X5. This detailed review (much more than a “first look”) explains how the program works, and finishes by saying, “you may soon wonder how you ever got along without a program like Personal Antispam to protect you.” There’s not much we can add to a statement like that!

Intego’s Dual Protection Name Used by Symantec

Intego has learned that Symantec has released an antivirus product bearing the name Dual Protection. Intego is the owner of a trademark registration for the mark DP DUAL PROTECTION in France (registered on January 17, 2007) and an international trademark registration for that mark (registered on July 2, 2007) in the United States, the European Community (27 countries), Switzerland, Monaco, Australia, and Japan. In the United States, Intego has applied to the Patent and Trademark Office to register the DP DUAL PROTECTION mark; Intego claims rights to this mark in the United States. Intego also owns the domain name dualprotection.com, which it registered on January 15, 2007. Symantec’s use of the name Dual Protection is without authorization from Intego. Symantec is not affiliated with or connected to Intego, and Symantec’s products do not originate with Intego. Intego takes its trademark and intellectual property rights seriously, and plans to ensure that these rights are respected.

Intego has three Dual Protection products:

New in X5: Send Malware to Intego

You may recall that we discussed sending spam to Intego; not spamming us, but sending us samples of your spam to help us improve Personal Antispam X5’s spam filters. Well, with VirusBarrier X5, we have added a similar feature, allowing you to send us malware - or suspected malware - to Intego’s Virus Monitoring Center.

To do this, right-click on a file in the Finder, then select More > VirusBarrier X5 > Submit Suspicious File to Intego. This will send the selected file to Intego’s researchers, so can check it and, if it is indeed unknown malware, update our virus definitions as soon as possible.

If you come across any suspicious files - or even if you have files that get flagged as infected by VirusBarrier - send them on so we can keep ensuring that you are protected from all known viruses.

Intego has earned a solid name for security products and this new release of its Security Barrier Antispam Edition boosts its reputation further by significantly enhancing its Mac security suite.

Thus begins MacUsers review of Internet Security Barrier X5, from the latest issue of the magazine, and just published on the web. The editors of MacUser clearly know Intego software, since they highlight the many changes from the X4 versions of the programs.
